It would be great if there was a way to be notified if a scrub finds errors.

You could use a custom cron with zpool status -x
This will report nothing if there are no alerts/errors
This is WON'T FIX for the moment, as I don't think ZFS has any (other) standardized mechanism for this
You could look at integrating this with something modular like logwatch or munin
