If this were a wiki, we could do these things ourselves, along with:

* http://zfs-fuse.net/issues/10
* correcting the Link to Emmanuel Anne's zfs-fuse repository to http://rainemu.swishparty.co.uk/cgi-bin/gitweb.cgi?p=zfs
* correcting the link to to Lenz Grimmer's zfs-fuse repository to http://gitorious.org/zfs-fuse

As for the related bugs (#15, #16, #17, #7) - why not put only minimal information in these files and refer to the project page as a reference point of documentation?

Thanks,
Christian.

I think you are making sense.

I'll forward the item to the list. The fact that this does not seem possible to do automatically, is - in itself - a sign that the site is not functioning (beyond a readonly hompage+ a basic bug tracker).

I'm personally struggling with the way this site is hosted. I had enormous trouble even posting a little news item on the experimental branch the other day. I've even resorted to the google groups wiki pages for more flexibility.

We have been asking this in various ways - and the answer has been 'it is to make zfs-fuse.net behave a wiki'. It is just, it seems

- no one knows how to actually do that
- no one is committed.

I repeat my readiness to do so, but on a condition: we host this in standard fashion (just a *Wiki or *Press install). I don't hate the bug tracker (yet). Something _anybody_ can handle.
Without a wysiwig editor, but _with _ something that works everywhere.
_With_ the ability to change your own email address.
_With_ the ability to see the registered users.
_With_ the ability to sort issues on date/latest activity.
Well, you get it :)

Work to do now, will post later

Thanks for your comments. I just wanted to say that it was not my intent to (start a) rant about this page, I'm actually quite happy that we have a zfs-fuse project page. Also, I'm not active in the "google groups mailinglist" either, so I cannot comment on what's been decided there. However, as the webmaster seems to be busy with other things, something more self-service (like a wiki) would be more useful, IMHO.

I do have some webspace available, but: would a full mediawiki installation be overkill for this one? However, a blog would mean that only a limited amount of people can maintain documentation and updates to the project.

The current bugtracker is very basic indeed, maybe this can be done via a Google Code project? No need to reinvent the wheel...

Thanks,
Christian.

back when (search the mailing list)

many options had been reviewed (git-hub, gitorious, google project etc) but this is what came out. I agree it is time for a re-eval

"I dunno how to edit / add a page / news item".

Are you SERIOUS?

No, really, are you serious?

How hard is it to *log in* with your account, then click THE EDIT LINK ATOP THE PAGE to edit the page?

Adding a news item? It turns out you *go to the news folder* then click the link that says *Add...* then click NEWS ITEM. It honestly could not be simpler than that.

And you even have an HTML editor. And you can use Wiki markup if you want to, as well. These are all options when you are editing a page.

Worst part is, if anyone has any questions, anybody can ask me specific questions (how do I upload a file? How do I create a wiki page? How do I shot web?). Yet strangely... no questions.

And the ONLY reason the site is not completely open to editing JUST LIKE A WIKI, is to prevent automated bot spam. Because, TBH, I *can* make the site behave like a wiki -- I have just had too many bad experiences with spam and malware peddlers to do that. So, all I ask i you want to edit the site, is to let me know what your account is so I can grant you rights to do so.

Honestly, this "site is difficult to use" is the thing that has baffled me the most in quite a while.

I don't have an 'edit' link.

[ At this time, I did not read all of your response yet, I will do that later (when I have time). ]

Sry mate, no need to get all worked up?

If this does not do to your blood pressure what it just did for me, then there is probably a minor cultural difference between you and me :)

I _was_ gonna post a serious request on the group. I might have given a bit of explanation as to why I think the site is difficult for me.

In the mean time, I hope we can hear each other out, and have a little patience.

Thanks,
Seth

I have added / edited the links as requested.

I am closing this bug. Let us continue this discussion on the list.

I am only closing it because I think this discussion is more suited to the list. Not because I do not think we should be discussing it.

> Are you SERIOUS?

No need to shout.

And, I still have no "edit" link on the front page (logged out, then in again), no "Add..." item in the news section either. Why not giving all logged-in users r/w access? (There are *working* ways to prevent spambots).

> I am closing this bug. Let us continue this discussion on the list.

I don't think the bug is closed yet, but anyway, I've subscribed to the list now.

Did you ask for manager access? No. I will make you a manager now.

I did when I've replied to http://groups.google.com/group/zfs-fuse/t/c7754984a4726e78, well that's what I'm trying to do, but my post doesn't show up yet.

Thanks!

Wiki: http://zfs-fuse.net/wiki

I believe this closes the bug. **Only this area** is accessible for non-managers to edit -- the areas of the site that pertain to release engineering remain with the old workflow (only managers can make sensitive changes).

Of course, wikilinks and standard cool stuff like history, "revert" and other wiki features are there as well.

(now THAT is how f**ing cool Plone is. really.)
Added by Rudd-O on Jan 29, 2010 02:34 PM
for future reference, what I did:

- add a "Wiki" folder to the root of the site
- enable placeful workflow
- set the workflow of the wiki folder to one state (always public)
- use the sharing tab to give logged-in users permission to add stuff to the site
- enable wikilinks in control panel

Presto instant wiki. MediaWiki might be cool, and I wrote my thesis using MediaWiki so my respects to the platform, but this thing is the Veyron of CMSes.
